Brett Van Wey, Fire & EMS Specialist
Until his retirement, Chief Van Wey was the Fire Chief of the San Marcos Fire Department. He began his career as a paid-call firefighter with the San Marcos Fire Protection District in San Diego County; the district would go on to become a subsidiary district to the City of San Marcos in 1990. Chief Van Wey worked his way up through the ranks over his 33-year career until obtaining the position of Fire Chief in 2014.
Chief Van Wey also worked for Palomar Community College as the Fire Technology Coordinator from 1996 until 2014, where he administered the fire technology program and had oversite of the Palomar Regional Fire Academy. During this time, he was a member of the California Fire Directors Association.
He has a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from San Diego State University. He holds an associate degree in Fire Science from Palomar Community College in San Diego, and he has attended hundreds of hours of seminar course work in fire protection.
Chief Van Wey has served in elected professional positions, including as the San Diego County Operational Area Coordinator, the Northzone Joint Powers Authority Dispatch Chairman and Finance Board member, a San Diego Regional Communications Board member, and a member of the San Diego Gas and Electric Citizen Advisory Board.
